MIMA - Middlesbrough Institute Of Modern Art

First in an occasional series, highlighting interesting new public buildings from around the country.

Winner of an RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) award, created by the famed Dutch architect Erick van Egeraat and built at a cost of £14.5m, MIMA represents a new breed of public building.

Designed as a result of public consultation, it's a relatively small building set within 5 acres of redeveloped land opposite the Town Hall, and is indicative of a move away from 'trophy' buildings towards architecture that is more in keeping with local regeneration and community needs.

Interestingly, the public square was designed in conjunction with Dutch landscape architects West 8.
